Harry Neto, Director of Solar, BESS and Building at WEG, revealed in an exclusive interview... Canal Solar The company intends to participate in the upcoming battery auction alongside strategic partners, acting as a supplier of EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) equipment and services.
According to the executive, the company does not intend to directly bid for the auction assets, but rather to work in conjunction with investors and companies in the electricity sector responsible for operating the projects.
"WEG doesn't acquire the asset because we don't compete with our clients. We partner with the company as a supplier of equipment and services, providing full EPC for the battery," he stated.
According to Harry Neto, WEG is also preparing a national BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) solution of 6,9 MWh manufactured in Brazil – a move aligned with the expectation that the auction may bring incentives for projects with local content.
The executive further explained that the company is already negotiating preliminary agreements with partners interested in participating in the bidding process, mainly due to the factory's initial production capacity. "We are negotiating preliminary agreements to participate in the auction together," he added.
Batteries already represent 20% of the financial value of the kits sold by WEG.
Asked about the investment landscape in storage, Harry Neto said that the Brazilian market is already beginning to show significant growth, especially in the residential, commercial, and industrial segments.
According to him, although battery-powered systems do not yet represent the majority of the company's sales volume, they already account for about 20% of the financial value of the kits currently sold by the company.
"Due to the drop in the price of photovoltaic modules and the added value of batteries, systems with energy storage already represent around 20% of the financial value of the kits sold today at WEG," he revealed.
The executive highlighted that WEG already sells 5 kW and 10 kW batteries through the same channel used for distributed solar generation, in addition to larger solutions aimed at the business segment.
Strong growth in storage expected in the coming years.
According to him, technological advancements in the residential market are still largely tied to backup applications in case of power outages. In the commercial and industrial sectors, however, batteries are beginning to be used in more sophisticated strategies, such as... peak shaving e stacking recipes.
Harry Neto also said that the company expects strong growth in the integration of solar energy and batteries in the coming years, driven by factors such as reverse flow, curtailment and future dynamic pricing. "We believe that, within a five-year horizon, something close to two-thirds of new solar systems should already include batteries," he stated.
According to him, international markets are already beginning to demand storage associated with solar power plants, a movement that is also expected to gain momentum in Brazil. "In Mexico, for example, there are already rules that prohibit you from building a solar power plant without batteries. This is a trend that should start happening here as well," he assessed.
electric mobility
Harry Neto also commented on WEG's position in the electric mobility market. According to the executive, the company is already heavily involved in supplying electric traction systems, batteries, and charging infrastructure for electric buses, trucks, and special applications.
The company also supplies fast chargers and alternating current charging equipment for electric vehicles. "WEG is currently one of the largest suppliers of electric buses in Brazil, including batteries and traction systems," he stated.
