Mexico, South Korea, South Africa, and the Czech Republic make up Group A of the 2026 World Cup, but they also appear to be at different stages of the global energy transition. Among the teams in the group, Mexico currently has the highest share of renewable sources in electricity generation, according to international energy sector reports.
Recent data from IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency) and IEA (International Energy Agency) indicate that Mexico maintains a more diversified electricity matrix, with a significant presence of solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. The country has been expanding clean energy projects, mainly in the northern and central regions.
South Africa occupies an intermediate position in the group. Despite its strong historical dependence on coal, the country has accelerated investments in solar and wind farms in recent years to reduce electricity supply crises and carbon emissions. The South African government has also received international support for energy transition programs.
South Korea, in turn, has a smaller share of renewables in its total energy mix, but is experiencing rapid growth in offshore solar projects, green hydrogen, and industrial electrification. The Asian country still relies heavily on natural gas and nuclear power for its energy supply.
The Czech Republic, on the other hand, maintains an energy matrix based primarily on nuclear power and coal. Although it has increased investments in renewable sources within the framework of the European Union's climate goals, the country still has one of the lowest shares of clean energy among the members of Group A.
The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, with an unprecedented expansion to 48 teams. Group A will have matches played mostly in Mexican cities.
