The ONS (National Electric System Operator) has prepared a special operation to monitor the impacts of the 2026 World Cup on energy consumption in Brazil.
During the main games of the competition, the agency will release bulletins with analyses of load behavior in the SIN (National Interconnected System).
The reports will be available on the Operator's website after the matches and will provide consolidated data on consumption variations recorded before, during, and after the games.
In the first phase, the special monitoring will cover the Brazilian National Team's matches on June 13, 19, and 24. The operation will also include the semifinals, scheduled for July 14 and 15, and the final, on July 19.

How do games affect energy consumption?
According to the operator, high-audience events, such as matches of the Brazilian National Team and decisive phases of the World Cup, cause significant changes in the load behavior of the electrical system.
Typically, about two hours before the start of the games, there is a gradual reduction in energy demand due to the shutdown or decrease in commercial and industrial activities, as well as people traveling to watch the matches.
This movement creates a downward ramp in the load that usually extends until the end of the first half. During halftime, however, the behavior is reversed.
With people temporarily leaving the television to perform household activities, such as using appliances or preparing food, there is a rapid increase in demand.
After the game ends, a new ramp-up in load is observed, requiring increased attention from system operators.
In this sense, to ensure that these fluctuations occur safely and without compromising the energy supply, the ONS (National System Operator) monitors load behavior in real time and coordinates the operation of power plants and other electrical system facilities.
The goal is to ensure that the energy supply keeps pace with the rapid variations in consumption recorded before, during, and after matches.
"During these games, it's common for the country to come to a standstill, which has a direct impact on the operation of the SIN (National Interconnected System)," explains the Director-General of ONS (National System Operator), Marcio Rea.
“But we are prepared to guarantee a safe and reliable response during the competition, ensuring that the system responds adequately to variations in societal demand. This work reinforces our planning, monitoring, and preventative actions,” he emphasized.
Other measures to ensure system security
The ONS's special operation will cover the period between two hours before and two hours after the games considered strategic for the operation of the electrical system.
During this period, no scheduled interventions that could cause load shedding or increase the risk of power supply interruptions in any region of the country will be authorized.
The exception will be for activities considered unavoidable, where postponement could pose risks to the safety of people, the integrity of equipment, or the operation of the electrical system itself.
Furthermore, the ONS will conduct continuous monitoring of weather conditions throughout the SIN (National Interconnected System), with the aim of identifying in advance regions with a higher probability of severe storms or other weather events that could affect operations.
According to the Operator, this type of special action is traditionally adopted during major national events and follows the guidelines of... Resolution No. 1/2005 from the CMSE (Electricity Sector Monitoring Committee), which establishes measures to reinforce the security of electricity supply on occasions of great importance to the country.
