A ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Standards) established the Commission de Studies de Safety Contrary to Fire em Systems containing Accumulators de Energy.
The objective is to establish technical standards necessary to prevent fires in batteries for various uses, including technologies for storage de renewable energy and use of electromobility.
Second Rogério Lin, superintendent of the Brazilian Fire Safety Committee (CB-24) of ABNT, the use of batteries is a great advance for humanity, as it allows photovoltaic systems to produce energy during the day and accumulate the surplus for later use of electricity at night.
Likewise, batteries make it possible to use cell phones, tools and electrified vehicles more comfortably and often with less impact on the environment.
“As energy accumulators increase their energy density, new technologies such as lithium-ion batteries have emerged, which are more efficient in charging and in the durability and useful life they offer”, Lin pointed out.
“At the same time, they created potential risks that must be mitigated and controlled not only at their origin, but also in cases where they are unavoidable. One of the existing risks is thermal runaway, a phenomenon that rarely occurs, but which creates a high-impact fire risk, especially when located inside buildings,” he added.
The Committee is calling on experts from multiple sectors, including professionals who work with electric vehicles, battery recyclers, renewable energy, among others, so that they can contribute further to this commission. Interested parties can contact us via email: cb-24@abnt.org.br.
