Around R$1,3 billion, referring to the marketing bonus for the Brazilian part of the Itaipu Binational Hydroelectric Plant, will be used to reduce the electricity bills of residential and rural consumers who consumed less than 350 kWh in 2023.
The decision was taken by ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) on Tuesday (26). According to the Agency, more than 78,3 million consumer units, 97% of the total residential and rural units in the country by the end of 2023, will benefit from a credit on their electricity bill for January 2025. The bonus is only valid for consumers within the SIN (National Interconnected System).
But what will be the discount amount on the bill?
A ANEEL clarified that the Itaipu Bonus Tariff for 2023 was approved with the value of R$ 0,011648844 per kWh. Therefore, to calculate the bonus that will be on their bill, the consumer must multiply the value of the Bonus Tariff by the amount in kWh informed on the energy bill in each month of 2023 in which consumption was less than 350 kWh – the value of the bonus for the consumer will be the sum of these monthly results.
For example, if a family consumed exactly 100 kWh per month in the 12 months of the year, the calculation will be R$ 0,011648844 (bonus tariff) x 100 (monthly consumption in kWh) x 12 (months), totaling R$ 13,98.
Since the average consumption in 2023 among the 78,3 million benefited units was 119 kWh per month, a family with this consumption would receive a bonus of R$16,66. ANEEL released the value of the Itaipu Bonus Tariff and the estimate of the possible impacts of this tariff on the bills of the benefited consumer units. Check it out below:

I have a question about what will happen to consumer units with DG, who already pay the minimum, will they also have these amounts reduced?
