Tokyo Olympics arenas use solar energy panels

Synonymous with technology, Japan invests heavily and has sustainable arenas

The stage for several competitions that will be part of the Tokyo Olympic Games, the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza arena located in Chōfu, is one of the spaces that stands out for its sustainability as it has a roof with solar energy panels, responsible for supplying part of the place.

The multipurpose space will host the badminton and modern pentathlon events, and the Paralympics wheelchair basketball. The arena was the first to be delivered and had an estimated cost of US$ 300 million, with capacity for 7,200 fans.

Another place that will host the competitions is the Ariake Arena, located in the city that gives rise to its name. The space will host the Olympic volleyball and Paralympic basketball competitions.

With a capacity of 15 thousand fans, the structure of the venue has solar panels that cover the curved roof designed to avoid light reflections towards nearby buildings. The site also has thermal collectors and geothermal pumps with the aim of reducing CO₂ emissions.

After being postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Tokyo Olympic Games will be held between July 23 and August 8, and will feature the most modern arenas in the world.

The facilities built, or renovated, especially for the competition offer the most innovative features in sport, especially in relation to sustainability and environmental preservation techniques used in most of the spaces, starting with the Olympic Stadium, the main stage of the Games .

The stadium, completed at the end of 2019, will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the games, and the athletics competitions. With a design that focuses on promoting energy efficiency, allowing natural airflow to avoid dependence on air conditioning during the heat of the Japanese summer.
