Investments in the global market for building-integrated photovoltaic technologies – known by the acronym BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaics) – are expected to more than double by the end of this decade.

According to the latest report from BCC Research, the segment is expected to jump from US$17,1 billion in 2024 to US$42 billion in 2029, registering an average annual growth rate of 19,7% in the period.

BIPV solutions involve incorporating solar panels directly into architectural elements such as facades, roofs, and windows. This integration has gained traction in urban projects due to its combination of aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability.

The study points out that the expansion of the modality is anchored in a series of factors, including the increased demand for clean energy, technological advances in solar cells and government policies that encourage energy-efficient buildings.

Furthermore, growing pressure to reduce carbon emissions has led businesses, consumers and governments to seek sustainable alternatives.

Market analysis and global competition

With 88 data tables and 63 additional tables, the report provides an in-depth analysis of the current and future landscape of BIPV technologies.

The methodology considers data from 2023, updated estimates for 2024 and projections until 2029, segmenting the market by technology, application, user type and geographic region.

The publication also provides a mapping of the sector's main players, such as Tesla, Jinko Solar, Canadian Solar, and Trina Solar, as well as specialized companies such as Heliatek, Onyx Solar, and Ertex Solar.

The report assesses everything from companies' product portfolios and financial performance to their strategic moves—such as mergers, acquisitions, product launches, and partnerships.

The competitive landscape is analyzed in light of factors such as technological innovations, patent registrations, research activities, and challenges related to environmental, social, and governance practices. There is also a section dedicated to the SWOT analysis of the four main BIPV technologies on the market.

It's worth noting that the survey only considers commercially implemented projects, whether new construction or renovations. Initiatives still in the design phase, after-sales services, and large-scale power grid projects were excluded from the market size calculations.

Global expansion and urban protagonism

The research also reveals that the sector's growth is led by regions such as North America, Europe, Asia, the Pacific and Latin America – with a highlight on countries such as the United States, Germany, China, Japan, South Korea and Brazil.

These markets have been consolidating themselves as hubs of innovation in the adoption of BIPV, especially in urban developments committed to decarbonization targets.

The report also highlights the slowdown in the European solar market's growth rate in 2024. After registering an expansion of more than 40% the previous year, the sector grew by only 4% this year.

Despite the percentage drop, the volume of new solar installations on the continent reached an unprecedented level: 66 GW were added to installed capacity, surpassing the previous record of 63 GW achieved in 2023.

The figures show that, although growth has slowed, Europe continues to invest in the expansion of solar energy as a pillar of its energy transition strategy.
