The trade and services sectors recorded a loss of R$ 2,1 billion in revenue during the blackout that hit the city of São Paulo and the Metropolitan Region in recent days, according to an estimate by FecomercioSP (Federation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism of the State of São Paulo).
The losses were more intense in the services sector, which failed to generate around R$ 1,4 billion in revenue during the period. The biggest impact occurred on Wednesday (10), when the sector recorded a loss of R$ 541 million, in a scenario where more than 2,2 million properties were left without power supply.
The retail sector was also heavily affected that day. On Wednesday alone, the sector recorded losses of R$ 267 million. Since then, losses have continued over the following days and, by Sunday, totaled R$ 696 million, according to the Federation.
The financial shortfall already exceeds the losses recorded in October 2024, the last major power outage in the city of São Paulo. On that occasion, heavy rains left properties without power for at least five days, resulting in estimated losses of R$ 2 billion for commerce and services.
Demand for generators and battery-powered systems increases after blackout.
Given the economic impact and instability in supply, the search for backup power solutions has increased in the region.
RT Solar, a company specializing in the installation of solar energy systems with batteries, for example, reported that it has registered significant growth in demand.
According to Roni Torres, the company's owner, the company received 114 inquiries from people interested in battery-powered systems between Friday and Sunday – a number well above the usual average, which ranges between 10 and 15 qualified leads.
The increase occurred after the company launched a social media campaign on the very day of the blackout. "Demand has been so high that I haven't been able to oversee any projects this week," Torres revealed.
The trend was also observed in companies that operate exclusively in emergency power generation. Tecnogera, which specializes in generator rentals, reported that daily requests (which normally do not exceed 50) reached 2,5 during the week of the blackout, mainly from restaurants, buffets, and medium-sized companies.
