Have you ever thought about receiving cashback when paying your electricity bill or generating passive income by investing in solar energy for your business or rural property? This is the business model of Desperta Energia, a company specialized in the rental of photovoltaic plants, both large and smaller projects.

Desperta Energia began operations in the second half of 2023 and already manages more than 12 MW in leased solar plants, serving around a thousand customers. The company operates in states such as Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Bahia, Pernambuco and Pará, covering 32 concession areas.

Unlike other shared generation companies, which offer discounts on electricity bills, Desperta Energia has adopted a cashback model, in which the consumer can receive a return of between 10% and 18% of the amount paid on the monthly bill.

“In our view, offering a discount is a bad way to sell a good product, because telling the consumer that they will get a discount greatly reduces the benefit and makes the consumer soon not realize that they are getting a benefit from solar energy,” said Marciliano Freitas, CEO of the company.

According to the executive, the choice for this innovative business model in the solar sector is due to the fact that cashback is a more effective way to increase the perception of the product's value, since the customer has, on a monthly basis, a clear view of the benefit received in reais.

Furthermore, cashback makes it possible to create various loyalty strategies, such as offering greater benefits to more loyal customers or rewards for paying on time.

In this new phase, the company aims to acquire 250 to 300 new customers per month, in addition to expanding the supply of solar energy by 1,5 MW to 2 MW per month by the end of the year, with a forecast of reaching an additional 10 MW per month in 2025.

“Our vision is to bring the benefits of solar generation to consumers who do not have the possibility or conditions to install a plant on their own roof,” stated Freitas.

Generating income with solar energy

Desperta Energia has created a business model that encourages solar plant owners to install systems with power greater than their consumption, thus generating an energy surplus that allows customers to obtain an additional monthly income.

The process works as follows: the partner integrator offers the customer the option of renting the photovoltaic system to Desperta Energia, which, in return, pays a monthly fee for the surplus energy generated. Thus, the integrator sells a larger project, and the consumer obtains a financial return in addition to the discount on the electricity bill.

However, this model is not suitable for all types of customers, as it requires a sufficient area to install a system with greater power. Therefore, the industrial, commercial and rural sectors are the best suited to take advantage of this benefit.
