The Chinese state-owned company CGN Brazil Energy and PIT (Piauí Institute of Technology) formalized last Thursday (28) a research and development project to evaluate the viability of CSP (Concentrated Solar Power) technology with thermal storage in Piauí.
According to the state government, the initiative will last six months and will analyze regulatory, technical, industrial, and economic aspects of the technology, which is considered an alternative for dispatchable renewable energy generation with energy storage capacity.
At the end of the period, feasibility studies for the implementation of a CSP pilot plant in the state should be presented.
The work also includes comparing climate data between Piauí and China, identifying technologies with potential for local application, evaluating the national supply chain, and developing regulatory proposals to enable the adoption of CSP in the Brazilian market.
The technology uses mirrors to concentrate solar radiation and generate heat, which can be stored and later converted into electricity.
Unlike conventional photovoltaic systems, CSP allows for thermal energy storage, increasing the operational flexibility of the electrical system.
The research brings together professionals from PIT, CGN Brazil Energy, and researchers from UFPI (Federal University of Piauí), UESPI (State University of Piauí), and IFPI (Federal Institute of Piauí).
Rafael Jales, president of PIT, stated that the project is the result of cooperation between Piauí and China in the renewable energy sector and highlighted that approximately 80% of the researchers selected for the initiative are from Piauí.
According to Sílvia Rocha, legal and compliance director of CGN Brazil Energy, the company also operates two other renewable generation assets, such as the Lagoa do Barro Wind Complex and the Nova Olinda Solar Park, which are part of the company's Renewable Energy Hub in Piauí.
