The Rio Grande do Sul Fire Department made available for public consultation the draft resolution that aims to establish minimum fire safety requirements in buildings that have photovoltaic systems or in areas with solar farms.
The photovoltaic system is safe as long as all technical precautions are strictly observed during its installation and use. However, given that it involves electricity, it is essential to establish procedures that reinforce safety, especially against fires.
See some of the guidelines that must be followed if the draft is approved as stated in the public consultation:
- The photovoltaic plant must have a quick shutdown system installed in a safe location, allowing it to be activated without the need for ladders or tools;
- The photovoltaic system must have protection equipment against electric arc;
- The installation of photovoltaic equipment in humid environments, as well as in areas subject to flooding, is prohibited;
- Buildings that contain photovoltaic panels must be made of non-combustible material or be treated with a product that makes it combustion-free;
- Panels should not be installed in places where explosive or flammable materials are manufactured, stored or handled;
- In the case of soil plants, their enclosure must be provided;
- For solar farms, access for Fire Department vehicles must be provided to the locations where the photovoltaic equipment is located;
- An emergency plan must be provided, which must contain all the procedures to be carried out.
