From January to June, the CCEE (Electricity Trading Chamber) ccompleted the migration of 10.956 consumers protocols for Free Energy Market in 2024. This is the highest volume of migration ever recorded in the entire history of this hiring environment, created in 1995. For comparison purposes, 7.397 accessions were registered throughout 2023.
Of the total number of adhesions this year, 89,3% are small and medium-sized consumers with loads of less than 0,5 MW, known as retail customers. These consumers benefited from a change in access criteria to the free market, which began in January this year.
With the publication of Ordinance 50/2022, smaller consumers connected to high voltage (Group A), such as pharmacies, bakeries, butchers, gyms, supermarkets, small industries, among other businesses, are all authorized to migrate to the free environment.
In this year, the largest volume of migrations was recorded in the commerce (2.872 units), services (2.809) and food (1.261) segments. In the state analysis, highlighting São Paulo (3.782 units), Rio Grande do Sul (1.089) and Rio de Janeiro (1.028).
For 2024, the migration of 25.226 units consumers to the free market.
Currently, the free market has a total of 48.919 thousand consumers. In the first half of the year alone, these customers consumed 27,1 thousand average MW, a volume that represents 37,5% of the total electricity demanded by the country in this period.
For now, consumers in Group B, where residential customers are located, cannot enter the free market. However, the Ministry of Mines and Energy has already announced that it intends to fully open the market by 2030.
According to Alexandre Ramos, president of the CCEE Board of Directors, the entity is prepared for the total opening of the free market.
“We defend that electricity bill portability is a reality for all citizens of the country. Freedom of choice, with the consumer at the center of the business, generates more competitiveness, promotes the modernization of the sector and, consequently, can result in cheaper energy. CCEE has invested in technologies, processes and people and will be ready for the total opening of the free energy market when the country advances in the necessary regulations for this to happen”, said the executive, in a statement.
