With school holidays, many children and teenagers spend more time at home, which requires extra attention to electrical safety. To ensure a safe environment, EDP reinforces guidelines to prevent accidents involving electricity in the home.
During this period, electrical installations can pose a greater risk, especially in the presence of children, who are often not very aware of the dangers involved when handling devices and equipment.
A survey of the Statistical Yearbook of Accidents of Electrical Origin by Abracopel (Brazilian Association for Raising Awareness of the Dangers of Electricity) shows that indicators involving children between 0 and 15 years of age deserve attention.
In total, there were 92 accidents resulting from electric shocks with this age group recorded in 2022 and 91 accidents in 2023. Therefore, it is essential to adopt specific precautions to avoid accidents.

“It is essential that parents and guardians pay attention to electrical safety at home, as children are more likely to handle appliances and wires without fully understanding the risks. Small precautions can make all the difference in ensuring a safe and peaceful environment during the holidays,” warned Roberto Miranda, EDP manager.
Inside the home, old electrical installations, too many devices plugged into the same socket and improvised wiring are the main risk factors. In addition, it is necessary to ensure that children do not have access to electrical sockets and cables, as well as to avoid using electrical devices with wet hands or near sources of water. The use of cell phones plugged into the socket should also be avoided, as it can pose an additional danger.
Practical tips for greater safety during the holidays:
- Protect all sockets with specific devices;
- Avoid “makeshift solutions” and excessive use of power strips; prefer power strips with fuses;
- Regularly inspect the wiring, especially in circuits with higher-power equipment such as showers and air conditioning;
- Do not connect electrical appliances near showers or swimming pools;
- Instruct children not to handle electrical equipment with wet hands;
- Use certified device chargers to avoid short circuits;
- Unplug electronic devices from the socket in the event of storms with many atmospheric discharges or in the event of a power outage;
- Replace electrical cables with worn or cracked insulation;
- Make sure that the internal installations are adequate for the number of devices connected at the same time;
- It is not recommended to use your cell phone or answer calls if the device is plugged into the socket.
