Electricity bills are among the main reasons for default in Brazil. Data from Serasa shows that debts classified as utilities, which mainly include energy and water tariffs, ended 2025 representing 22,1% of the total defaults in the country, ranking behind only banks and credit cards (26,1%).

In the previous month, November, this percentage was 21,9% – indicating stability at a high level. In practice, this means that more than a fifth of Brazilians' debt is related to basic services, especially electricity.

The data confirms a structural market behavior: the utilities sector historically fluctuates between 21% and 24% of the total debt representation, according to... Map of Default and Debt Renegotiation in Brazil, monthly survey by Serasa.

Currently, the country has 81,2 million people in debt, which reinforces the social dimension of the problem. This scenario highlights the importance of structural solutions for reducing energy bills, such as energy efficiency and self-generation, especially in a context of pressured income and rising cost of living.

The significance of electricity bills is also evident in the sheer volume of debt, a direct reflection of accumulated tariff adjustments and the effects of inflation on essential costs. In this context, solar energy has proven to be a concrete alternative for financial relief.
