A Embrapa Rice and Beans, located in the city of Santo Antônio de Goiás (GO), announced that it is installing a solar energy plant with an average production potential of 600,003 kWh per year.

In total, R$ 1,835,625 was invested in the construction of the project, with operations expected to begin in June 2022. The company's aim is to reduce the unit's electricity consumption costs.

A technical survey carried out by the civil engineer, Alessandro Carlos Silva, and the electrical engineer, Fábio Shirahige, both from the Contracting and Infrastructure Management of the General Secretariat – Embrapa Headquarters/DF, indicates that Embrapa Arroz e Feijão has the Group's consumption classification A, with contracted demand of 420 kW and measurement in Medium Voltage and Transformation Substation of 500 kVA.

This means, according to the company, that this photovoltaic plant alone would be enough to cover the consumption of 500 popular homes. Solar energy generation is part of the company's entry into the Energy Self-Sufficiency Program, which aims to reduce electricity consumption across Embrapa to zero by 2030.

These coordinated actions also involve entry into the Mercado Livre de Energia with the execution of actions to improve energy efficiency in infrastructure and the construction of DG (distributed generation) plants.

To implement these actions, a working group was created and is in the preparation and contracting phase for DUs (Demonstration Units) in the Central-West and Southeast regions, in addition to Rondônia and Acre.

Embrapa's general execution schedule for Bidding/Contracting is divided into five lots following the geographic division of the country: Central-West, Northeast, North, Southeast and South.

In 2021, the project included actions to implement photovoltaic plants at Embrapa Agrossilvipastoril (MT), Embrapa Pesca e Aquicultura (TO) and Embrapa Soja (PR). In 2022, implementation is planned in eight more UDs: Rice and Beans (GO), Agrobiology (RJ), Food Agroindustry (RJ), Cerrados (DF), Floresta (PR), Semiarid (PE) and Livestock Southeast (SP).
