Brazil recorded a 2,1% increase in electricity consumption in October 2024, compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching a total of 71.613 MW on average, according to data released by CCEE (Electric Energy Trading Chamber).
Almost 60% of this energy was directed to the regulated market, where consumers buy electricity directly from local distributors.
In this segment, consumption increased by 1,2% year-on-year, driven mainly by above-average temperatures in several regions of the country, such as the North, Southeast and South.
The increased use of equipment such as air conditioning and fans was the main reason for this growth, according to an analysis by CCEE.
In the Free Energy Market, which allows consumers to choose their energy supplier and negotiate contractual conditions, consumption increased by 3,5% compared to October 2023.
This result was influenced by the good economic performance of almost all monitored sectors and by the entry of new cargo into this contracting environment.
Energy consumption by economic activity
Among the 15 sectors of the Brazilian economy monitored by CCEE, the automotive industry led the growth in energy consumption in October, with a 10% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Next, the sectors of various manufactured goods (9,2%) and sanitation (7,2%) stood out. On the other hand, two segments recorded a decline in consumption: telecommunications (-2,4%) and chemicals (-4%).
Consumption by region
Energy consumption also showed significant variations between Brazilian states. This increase was attributed to above-average temperatures in the North, South and Southeast regions and in part of the Northeast, in addition to the good performance of the Free Energy Market during the month.
Maranhão led the growth, with an increase of 10,5%, followed by Santa Catarina (9,3%) and Amazonas (5%). On the other hand, some areas faced drops in consumption, mainly due to low rainfall and milder temperatures, with emphasis on Acre (-5,1%), Amapá (-4,4%) and Goiás (-4,1%).
