Compliant published No. Canal Solar, MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) confirmed that Brazil aims to include energy storage in close auction capacity reserve, expected to August this year.

A decision da Pasta motivated the discussion between the ABAQUE (Energy Storage Solutions Association), ABEEOLIC (Brazilian wind energy association), ABSAE (Energy Storage Solutions Association), ABSOLAR (Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association) and ABINEE (Electrical and Electronics Industry Association) on the need and feasibility of insertion of storage solutions associated with renewable generation in 2024 capacity reserve auction.

Em note released jointly, entities express the importance of the storage system as a driver for energy transition in the country, aiming for a low-carbon economy.

In the document, the associations argue that these solutions are compatible with the demand of the electrical system, contributing to reducing clean and renewable energy losses, in addition to highlighting the cost reduction and existence of local manufacturers of these systems.

Furthermore, they stated that although in this first version storage associated with renewable generation was not considered, recent publications demonstrate that there is an intention and commitment on the part of the MME to include these integrated solutions; which reaffirms the Brazil's leading role in the energy transition.

Energy storage advancements and considerations

According to EPE (Energy Research Company), the storage system provides energy for a specific period of time, ranging from one to four hours per day, depending on the demand of the electrical system.

In the note, the entities also highlight the importance of a management module for storage solutions in the DESSEM* model of system operation programming. ONS (National Electric System Operator), which allows integration and the ability to dispatch energy in the SIN (National Interconnected System).

The associations also comment on the ability to reduce losses of clean and renewable energy at times of excess generation, since storage solutions allow the transfer of this energy to times of greatest load.

Another highlight raised by the associations is the reduction in the costs of storage solutions by more than 50% in the last two years worldwide and the existence of manufacturers of this type of solution in the country.

Finally, the associations state that in addition to storage systems already being a reality in Brazil, with several projects in operation validated by ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), and worldwide, with more than 30 GW of new storage projects implemented annually; This attests to the security and relevance of this technology for the System.

“In the same way, they trust that not only the MME, but other entities in the electricity sector will be able to promote a competitive Auction that guarantees reasonable tariffs, security and quality of energy”, says the note.

“Stressing energy storage as an essential pillar to align Brazil with global energy transition trends, reaffirming a national commitment to sustainable development and the promotion of a low-carbon economy”, he adds.
