Residents of São Gonçalo, in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro, were left without electricity after a fire hit a power substation in the early hours of Thursday (31).
According to the Fire Department, the call came in around 3 a.m. The flames were brought under control during the early morning hours, but the incident caused power outages in other municipalities in the region.
In addition to São Gonçalo, neighboring cities such as Niterói, Maricá, Itaboraí, Duque de Caxias, and Magé also reported impacts on their energy supply.
According to Enel Distribuição Rio, the concessionaire responsible for the substation and for serving the affected municipalities, approximately 140.151 properties had their power supply interrupted.
During the early morning hours, the company reported having restored service to 94% of affected customers. Technical teams remained working to complete repairs and fully restore power to consumers who are still without electricity, mainly in areas of São Gonçalo.

From the moment the incident occurred, the distributor carried out remote network maneuvers to reduce the number of customers impacted, while technicians inspected the substation to identify the fault.
"During the early morning hours, service was restored to 94% of customers, and currently, teams are working on repairs to normalize service to the remaining customers in the municipality of São Gonçalo."
