A Kronos Solar EDPR, developer of solar plants controlled by EDP Renováveis, closed a long-term solar energy sales contract as Google. The agreement marks Kronos' entry into the Dutch market and brings Google closer to goal of operating 100% with renewable energy by 2030.

The energy sold comes from four photovoltaic plants that are being developed in the Netherlands. You projects total 50 MWp and are located in the provinces of Smallingerland, Friesland, and Gelderland. Still according to the company, thesinas will have more than 85 thousand bifacial solar panels.

Martijn Bertisen, Vice President of Google Netherlands, said: “Google has always been at the forefront of working towards a carbon-free future as part of our third decade of climate action. Digital transformation and green transformation go hand in hand.”

“Our ambition is to run completely on carbon-free energy by 2030. It will require intensive cooperation with key energy players, such as EDP Renováveis, who are jointly committed to long-term sustainable energy goals,” he said.

“With a strong focus on the Netherlands, France, the UK and Germany, which are currently transitioning increasingly quickly into PPA markets, we clearly want to demonstrate our ability to partner with leading global companies for our green energy. The sale of 70% from Kronos Solar to EDPR in 2022 has put us in a position to gain traction in the direct sale of green energy in the free market, which will be the largest market segment in the future”, says Dr. Alexander Arcache, CEO of Kronos Solar EDPR.

This PPA follows another agreement with Google announced in April to develop 650 MWp of distributed solar power in the United States.

Kronos Solar has long-term experience based on 80 commissioned projects in nine countries and a portfolio of more than 9 GW of solar projects at different stages of development. Germany, which is Kronos' home market, represents around 50% of the acquired solar portfolio.

Through the acquisition of 70% from Kronos, EDPR entered new markets such as the Netherlands and Germany and is now present in 13 countries in Europe, which together represent more than 90% of expected solar capacity additions in the European Union by 2030.

“Kronos Solar is confident, especially with last year's stake sale to EDPR, that it will be at the forefront of realizing large parks outside of national subsidy schemes in Germany and that it has a leading position in finding the right partners for its projects”, says the company in a press release.

EDP Renováveis expects to deploy 17 GW of green energy by 2026. “The signing of this PPA reinforces both our strategy and the delivery capacity of Kronos Solar EDPR. With ambitious goals in new markets such as the Netherlands, Kronos will represent a relevant part of EDPR's updated Business Plan.”

“Additionally, entering these markets allows us to be highly complementary with EDPR’s current geographic configuration so that we can expand access to the main markets in the European Union that are leading the energy transition”, highlights Duarte Bello, COO of EDP Renováveis for Europe and LATAM.
