The CDPNB (Brazilian Nuclear Program Development Committee), linked to the Institutional Security Office of the Presidency of the Republic, established a Technical Group (GT) with the mission of evaluating the national infrastructure necessary for the eventual reception of small and micro nuclear reactors in the country. The initiative was formalized through Resolution No. 43/2026, published this Wednesday (7) in the Official Gazette of the Union.
Modular microreactors are low-power nuclear reactors, generally up to 300 MW, designed in a compact and standardized way, with the capacity to generate decentralized and continuous energy.
Developed in several countries, this technology is being touted as a lower-cost alternative with a shorter implementation timeframe compared to conventional nuclear power plants.
The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, has publicly advocated for increased investment in nuclear power, highlighting Brazil's potential in uranium and the need for firm and distributed energy to strengthen the security and reliability of the electrical system.
A 100W microreactor will be installed in Rio de Janeiro to supply energy to small towns.
The working group will include primary and alternate representatives from the following bodies and entities:
- Institutional Security Office of the Presidency of the Republic;
- Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation;
- Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services;
- Ministry of Environment and Climate Change;
- Ministry of Mines and Energy;
- Amazonia Blue Defense Technologies SA;
- National Nuclear Safety Authority;
- National Nuclear Energy Commission;
- General Directorate of Nuclear and Technological Development of the Navy;
- Electronuclear;
- Brazilian Company for Holdings in Nuclear and Binational Energy;
- Energy Research Company;
- Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources;
- and Nuclear Industries of Brazil SA
The group will be coordinated by the Ministry of Mines and Energy and will have an initial term of 180 days, extendable once for up to 90 days. Ordinary and extraordinary meetings will take place at the Palácio do Planalto, in Brasília.
