Heavy rains that cause flooding in cities also benefit the electricity sector. According to the ONS (National Electric System Operator), hydroelectric reservoirs should exceed 70% by the end of February, ensuring greater safety for the system's operation throughout the year.
Currently at 61,8%, the Southeast/Central-West subsystem, which houses 70% of the country's hydroelectric plants, is expected to reach 74,2% of capacity. In the South, growth is expected from 61,2% to 70,6%. The Northeast is expected to increase from 69,9% to 79,2%, while the North will jump from 83,4% to 93,1%.
“We are in the wet season and, so far, it has been favorable for the recovery of the reservoirs of the National Interconnected System. In addition to the inflows, the actions adopted by the ONS have proven effective”, says Marcio Rea, General Director of the ONS.
The ENA (Inflowing Natural Energy) projections indicate 95% of the Long-Term Average (LTA) in the Southeast/Central-West. In the Northeast and South, the rates should reach 86% and 80% of the LTA, respectively. The North has the best expectation, with 110% of the LTA. The ENA represents the water that reaches the reservoirs with the potential to generate energy.
The load of the SIN (National Interconnected System) continues to grow, with an increase of 3,7% (86.400 MWmed). The largest increase should occur in the North, with 7,1% (7.890 MWmed), followed by the Northeast, with 4,1% (13.844 MWmed), and the Southeast/Central-West, with 3,9% (48.905 MWmed). The South registers the smallest expansion, 1,2% (15.762 MWmed). The percentages reflect the evolution of the projections for February 2025 in relation to the same period in 2024.
