A fire broke out, this Friday (30), in a container containing Tesla Megapack batteries during tests at the Victoria Big Battery in Geelong, state of Victoria, Australia – according to the CNBC website.
The incident happened just days after the battery – which will be the largest in the country when completed – received its official registration.
In a statement, Louis de Sambucy, managing director of Neoen Australia – a company that worked with Tesla and AusNet Services to develop the project – said no one was injured and the site was evacuated. The causes have not yet been disclosed.
“Neoen and Tesla are working closely with emergency services on site to manage the situation. The site has been disconnected from the grid and there will be no impact on the electricity supply. We will provide updates and more details as they become available,” he explained.
The Victoria Big Battery will provide wind and solar farm production services to help meet peak demand. Each megapack has around 3 MWh of lithium-ion battery storage.
The aim with this program is to help the state of Victoria meet a renewable energy target of 50% by 2030.
