Representing the ONS (National Electric System Operator), Marcio Rea, the Operator's Director-General, participated in the in-person meeting of GO15, a group that brings together operators from some of the world's largest electrical systems.
The meeting was held in Athens, Greece, and brought together around 30 executives from the international electricity sector to discuss the current and future challenges of operating power systems.
In addition to the group's technical meetings, Rea participated in a panel discussion promoted by GO15 in partnership with Med-TSO, an organization that brings together electrical operators from the Mediterranean region.
The debate addressed the impacts of the energy transition and the growth of data centers on the operation of electrical grids.
During the meeting, executives from operators in Brazil, the United States, and the Gulf region discussed the challenges associated with the rapid advancement of renewable energy sources and distributed micro and mini-generation (DMM).
When commenting on the Brazilian scenario, Rea highlighted that the country is experiencing an accelerated transformation of the electricity sector, driven mainly by the growth of renewable sources and distributed generation.
“By 2026, renewable sources will already represent about 85% of the installed capacity of the Brazilian electricity matrix, with projections to reach almost 88% by 2030. Growth is occurring more intensely in distributed generation, while the relative share of generation controlled by the Operator tends to decrease over time,” he stated.
"This transformation brings greater complexity to the operation of the electrical system, requiring new management models, greater operational flexibility, and adaptation of the energy infrastructure," he added.
Alexandre Zucarato, Planning Director at ONS, also participated in the meeting and followed the discussions related to electricity planning and the challenges of expanding the energy system.
What is GO15?
GO15 is an international association that currently brings together 18 electricity system operators responsible for more than 60% of global electricity demand.
The group aims to promote the exchange of experiences, discuss technical challenges, and develop strategies focused on the safe, reliable, and sustainable operation of electrical grids in different countries.
ONS is an active member of the association and participates in discussions related to the transformation of the global electricity sector. In 2026, Marcio Rea will hold the vice-presidency of GO15 and is expected to assume the presidency of the entity in 2027.
