A Itaipu Binacional reported that will install, on an experimental basis, a floating solar power plant with a capacity of 1 MWp in its reservoir.

The photovoltaic panels will be positioned on the side where Brazil borders the Paraguay and the energy generated will partially meet the internal consumption of the hydroelectric plant itself.

According to Itaipu's Brazilian general director, Enio Verri, the initiative is part of the company's efforts to contribute to the tackling the global climate crisis.

Among the advantages of the project are the technological development of sustainable solutions in the energy area, the creation of new businesssea optimization of reservoir use.

“These are environmental, social and economic benefits, and are within the current context of energy transition. The solution found could serve as a mirror for the installation of similar projects in other Brazilian reservoirs,” he said.

O notice for hiring of the service, with estimated value of US$ 1 million, was published this Thursday (25) and provides for the supply of equipment, installation, commissioning and technical assistance.

As interested companies to participate in the bidding must come together in the form of a binational consortium, composed of companies from Brazil and Paraguay, in which each consortium member must hold at least a 30% stake.

“They must also meet the qualification requirements and other requirements established in the notice”, explains Guilherme Mateus dos Anjos, from Itaipu’s technical support division, the area responsible for hiring.

The expectation is that the public bidding session will take place within 30 days after the release of the notice. Renewable energy consultancies on the Brazilian and Paraguayan sides will coordinate the execution of the service.

O Deadline for installing solar panels, from the signing of the service order, it will last 150 calendar days, including the delivery of the engineering project, electrical equipment, control and instrumentation system, mechanical structure, civil and structural works, construction, assembly and commissioning.

Another 180 days will be added for technical assistance, training and final acceptance of the product, totaling 330 days for project execution.

Other initiatives

In addition to the photovoltaic plant, the Itaipu Binacional, Itaipu Parquetec and Itaipu Technological Park informed that they will develop the project “Studies for the Sustainability of the Floating Solar Plant” in the reservoir of the Itaipu hydroelectric plant.

The project contemplates the preparation of generation comparison analyzes between the floating plant and other solar plants on land, analysis of business models for Brazilian and Paraguayan legislation, assessment of impacts on Itaipu's internal energy network (if any) and simulations for possible expansion of the floating plant and inclusion of battery systems.

O study will also raise possible environmental benefits expected from the project, such as reducing evaporation from the reservoir and mitigating the formation of algae, contributing to the preservation of aquatic ecosystems.

By reflecting sunlight, water can also increase the energy capture of solar panels, generating greater yield compared to terrestrial installations.
