From January to June, the Itaipu's electrical energy production totaled 40,651,877 MWh, growth of 35% compared to the same period of the previous year. According to the company, the result is the best ever achieved in a semester in five years. In 2019, the plant generated 40,451,294 MWh in six months.
The increase in generation is due to the greater availability of influent water for production, associated with greater demand from the interconnected systems of Brazil and Paraguay.
Itaipu's production this year is capable of serving the entire Central-West region for one year. When compared to other plants in Brazil, Itaipu's generation in six months was higher than the production for the entire year 2022 from the largest entirely Brazilian plant, the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant.
In 2022, Itaipu was responsible for 8.6% of Brazil's electricity supply, but it already reached 25% in the 1990s. Although the plant's share has decreased, the hydroelectric plant is important to guarantee the operational security of the electrical system.
Itaipu has been increasingly important in coping with variations in intermittent renewable sources, such as wind and solar, whose generation depends on the availability of wind and sun, which varies throughout the day.
