A Mercedes-Benz do Brasil – at an event held at its factory in São Bernardo do Campo, in ABC Paulista – announced a partnership with Raízen Power No. Dunamis Project, one of the largest solar plants in Rio Grande do Norte.
The truck and bus manufacturer acquired a stake in the project management company, implemented in 600 hectares in the municipality of Santana do Matos, in the central region of the state, involving four photovoltaic systems with total installed capacity of 117,54 MW.
O the model adopted in this partnership is self-production, which will allow the company to use 100% renewable energy, contributing to Daimler Truck's goal of expanding the use of renewable energy, in addition to reducing electricity consumption costs at its commercial vehicle factories in São Bernardo do Campo and Juiz de Fora, in Minas Gerais.
“This initiative by Mercedes-Benz do Brasil is fully aligned with Daimler Truck's environmental sustainability strategy, driving the transformation of our industry,” highlighted Achim Puchert, president of Mercedes-Benz do Brasil and CEO Latin America.
“We are working to achieve CO2 neutrality in our factories around the world and this also reinforces our commitment to generating clean energy, reducing emissions and mitigating the effects of climate change. This is yet another initiative that is connected to our commitment to the Paris Agreement,” he highlighted.
According to the executive, 100% of the energy needs of Mercedes-Benz do Brasil's operational units will be provided by these solar plants. "The volume of energy to be generated can help avoid the emission of around 20 thousand tons of CO2 per year, the equivalent of supplying power to 48 thousand homes."
Frederico Saliba, CEO of Raízen Power, added that the company has a complete and integrated portfolio of solutions focused on meeting market needs. “Advancing the partnership with Mercedes-Benz allows us to not only collaborate with the company’s sustainability journey, but also to continue advancing solar energy projects that contribute to the growth of renewable generation in the country.”
Since the construction of the plants, several social actions have been carried out by Raízen Power in the city of Santana de Matos, including renovation of the internal and external lighting of the local school, construction of shelters at bus stops along 20 km of road and supply of free electricity to consumer units of the City Hall of Santana do Matos, in addition to the generation of jobs and training of labor in partnership with SENAI.
Other environmental initiatives
The reduction in CO2 emissions from truck and bus factory activities is also evident in other actions, such as, for example, Zero Landfill, Urban Farm and the Renov line of remanufactured parts.
The Zero Landfill program, implemented in São Bernardo do Campo and Juiz de Fora, encompasses several processes for the disposal and recycling of materials. With this measure, the company stops sending approximately 1 million tons of waste per year to landfills, avoiding CO2 emissions and minimizing other environmental impacts.
The São Bernardo do Campo plant is home to the world's first Urban Farm installed inside an industry, producing 100% pesticide-free vegetables for consumption in the company's restaurants. Production in the greenhouse, next to the in-house restaurant, eliminates food waste during transportation and has zero CO2 emissions.
Since 2004, Mercedes-Benz do Brasil has been practicing the circular economy concept with its Renov line of remanufactured parts. It is one of the largest portfolios on the market, with more than 300 items for trucks and buses. In this case, Mercedes-Benz recovers worn parts applying the same level of quality required in the production of new items. The sustainable remanufacturing process results in reduced waste of materials and pollutant emissions.
