After another major blackout hit the city of São Paulo and municipalities in the Metropolitan Region, the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) released a statement to the press affirming that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has ordered "absolute rigor" in monitoring the quality of electricity distribution services.
The incident reignites the debate about the ability of the concessionaire Enel São Paulo to meet the regulatory parameters required for providing an essential service. In recent years, prolonged service interruptions have become routine in different regions served by Enel in São Paulo.
The statement comes in the context of recurring supply failures, especially during extreme weather events, a situation that has generated criticism from consumers, mayors, and consumer protection agencies.
According to the ministry, the distributor may be held liable if it fails to fully comply with quality standards and its contractual obligations, including the loss of its concession in the state, in addition to the application of administrative and legal sanctions.
In note, The Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) stated that "the Brazilian government will not tolerate repeated failures, prolonged interruptions, or any disrespect to the population." In practice, however, the possibility of revoking the concession depends on a complex regulatory process conducted by... ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency).
Inspection under pressure
According to the MME, since first occurrences of supply interruptionThe ministry has ordered the mobilization of the electricity sector to restore service in the affected areas.
A task force was also created with the support of other distributors to reinforce customer service teams, especially in regions impacted by heavy rains.
Finally, the Ministry informed that it will propose a meeting with the state governor and the mayor of the capital of São Paulo to align responsibilities and coordinate action.
Strong winds worsen the crisis and leave more than 2 million without power in São Paulo.
