O MME (Minister of Mines and Energy), Alexandre Silveira, told journalists this Wednesday (28) that he scheduled a seminar with authorities to re-discuss the tariff policy in Brazil. Without specifying a date, he limited himself to saying that the meeting will take place in 15 days.

“First I wanted to give complete and absolute reason to the governor [of Pará] Helder [Barbalho] on the tariff issue”, he declared to journalists after participating in the inauguration of a terminal LNG (liquefied natural gas) in the city of Barbacena, in Pará.

“There have been a series of distortions in recent years. O Public Power, which is responsible for formalizing public policy, unfortunately delegated [this responsibility]. This created very serious distortions in the tariff issue”, he added.

Silveira also highlighted that his management has already managed to “stop the bleeding” that was increasing energy tariffs in Brazil. “We achieved, initially, effective results in relation to the energy tariff, which was to stop the bleeding that had been going on for six years by strongly increasing the energy tariff in Brazil, especially creating distortions in some states of the federation.”

The head of the MME has criticized the high cost of fares of energy in the country. In fact, he recently said that the Government is negotiating with Eletrobras the anticipation of R$ 26 billion owed by the company due to the privatization process, with the intention of using these resources to lower the electricity bill this year.

Furthermore, Silveira has also declared that it intends to publish at least three MPs (Provisional Measures) that will impact the electricity sector. One of them would be precisely to mitigate the tariff adjustment in Amapá, whose electricity bill could rise by 38% if nothing is done.

natural gas terminal

Silveira and the governor of Pará participated this Wednesday morning in the inauguration of a natural gas terminal in the city of Barbacena. The venture cost R$ 280 million and will have the capacity to regasify 13 million m³/day.

The installation consists of a shore terminal and a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU in English) on the high seas.

The project is part of the Barbacena Thermoelectric Complex (624 MW), which will be essential to increase energy security in the North of Brazil, in addition to replacing other more polluting sources such as coal and heavy oil. According to the MME, just by replacing the fuel used in power generation, 30% less CO2 will be emitted into the atmosphere.

With investments of R$ 2.5 billion, the UTE is scheduled to open in July 2025. Some R$ 1.8 billion was financed by BNDES. The project also includes the construction of a 5-kilometer transmission line that will connect the plant to the (SIN) National Interconnected System.
