The most recent edition of the Monthly Review of EPE (Energy Research Company) showed that national electricity consumption was 47.850 GWh in February 2025, an increase of 3,3% compared to February 2024. This was the highest monthly consumption in the entire historical series since 2004.
The residential class led the increase in consumption with an annual rate of 5,2%. Industrial, commercial and other consumption, including rural, also showed expansion.
All regions consumed more: South (+5,9%), Southeast (+3,7%), Central-West (+2,0%), North (+1,8%) and Northeast (+0,5%). Accumulated consumption in the last 12 months was 562.056 GWh, an increase of 4,2% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Regarding the contracting environment, the free market, with 20.350 GWh, accounted for 42,5% of national electricity consumption, with growth of 10,1% in consumption and 65,0% in the number of consumers, compared to February 2024. The Central-West was the region that expanded consumption the most (+13,7%), while the Northeast had the largest increase in the number of free consumers (+77,3%).
The regulated distributor market, with 27.500 GWh, which accounted for 57,5% of national consumption, saw a 1,2% drop in consumption and a 1,8% increase in the number of consumers.
The migration movement of captive consumers to the free market remains intense after opening to all consumers in group A (high voltage) in February 2024, established in MME ordinance 50/2022.
