O national electricity consumption grew 5% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year, adding 72.416 average megawatts (MWmed).
According to CCEE (Electric Energy Trading Chamber), the increase is the result of high temperatures (which leads consumers to use more air conditioning) and the more intense activity in the service, commercial, food and beverage industries.
No regulated market from distributors, demand reached 45.986 MWmed, growth of 3,5% compared to the first quarter of 2023. In the Free Energy Market, the increase was 7,6%, with 26.431 MWmed consumed.
“Among the 15 sectors of the economy monitored by CCEE, the most significant increases were recorded in Sanitation (30%), Services (21,3%) and Commerce (19%). The increase partly reflects the large volume of migrations of new consumers for the free energy market, in addition to the economic performance of these sectors”, explains the Chamber.
Due to the heat and lower rainfall, the states that showed the greatest growth in consumption were Amazonas (23%), followed by Acre (18%). Maranhão (14%), Mato Grosso (12,9%), Tocantins (12,4%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (12,3%). Only Rio de Janeiro (-1,3%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1,6%) recorded a drop in energy demand.
Solar generation grows 47,9%
In the first quarter, production of solar energy grew 47,9%, with around 2.948 MWmed. On the other hand, the rains in the Northeast impacted wind farms, resulting in a -12,3% drop in generation (7.704 MWmed). Hydroelectric plants produced 56,9 thousand MWmed, an increase of 1,6%.
