The electricity supply has been restored in almost the entire region of the Copacabana and Leme neighborhoods, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), after a blackout that left entire streets in the dark since the afternoon of last Saturday (3).
However, the power is being restored with the help of generators while the utility company carries out definitive repairs to the network. According to Light, at least 62 generators have been installed at strategic points to guarantee supply in the affected areas.
The company reported that there is no estimated time for the removal of this equipment and attributed the interruption to a criminal act involving the theft of electrical network cables. In a statement released on social media, the company said that work continues throughout the day to restore the original configuration of the underground network, which was allegedly damaged by the thefts.
Resumption following court action.
The resumption of power supply comes a day after a court in Rio de Janeiro imposed a daily fine of R$ 200 on Light in case of non-compliance with the order to restore power.
The decision also stipulated that the company must present, within 24 hours, an estimate for the full restoration of supply, under penalty of an additional daily fine of R$ 20.
The injunction was granted by Judge Vinicius dos Angeles Nascimento, of the Judicial Duty Court of the Capital District, in response to a Public Civil Action filed by the Public Defender's Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro.
Interruption in supply
The blackout in the neighborhoods of Copacabana and Leme began around 17 pm on Saturday (3) and extended throughout the days, with reports of prolonged instability on several roads.
In addition to the inconvenience to residents, the power outage caused significant losses to local businesses, affecting restaurants, beauty salons, and shops during peak season. According to estimates from the region's Gastronomic Hub, financial losses reached R$ 1,35 million.
