ONS determines increased use of thermal power plants to guarantee energy supply

The ONS (National Electric System Operator), together with the CMSE (Electric Sector Monitoring Committee), requested the maximization of thermal generation and the state of readiness of Brazilian plants.

The measure aims to ensure the supply of electricity to the SIN (National Interconnected System) during the dry period and the transition to the next wet period, between the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026.

The request is part of the set of operational actions and recommendations presented by the Operator to ensure full compliance with load and power demands in the second half of 2025.

Currently, the ONS is responsible for coordinating and controlling the operation of the generation plants and transmission systems that make up the SIN, while the CMSE works to monitor the sector and propose measures that ensure the security and reliability of the energy supply.

Operational recommendations

During a meeting held in June, the ONS presented the CMSE with a series of recommendations to reinforce power supply in the coming months and begin the recovery of storage levels.

The board also decided to maintain continuous monitoring of the Southern subsystem, which has been recording low levels in its reservoirs due to the unfavorable weather conditions observed in recent months.

Suggested measures include:

• The use of the modulation capacity of the hydroelectric plants on the São Francisco River;
• Maximum use of the Itaipu HPP;
• Expanding the availability of thermal generation.

“There is a prospect of rising levels in the reservoirs of Sul starting in August, but we remain attentive to the region. The issue of power supply in the second half of the year also remains a priority and we have proposed different actions that will ensure that demand is met”, stated the general director of ONS, Marcio Rea.
