OpenAI, in partnership with Oracle and SoftBank, announced an ambitious project to build five new data centers dedicated to Artificial Intelligence (AI) processing, with a potential investment of up to US$500 billion.
This project, called Stargate, aims to substantially expand the infrastructure needed to support the exponential growth of AI technologies in the coming years.
The five new data centers will be distributed across several strategic locations in the United States, allowing OpenAI to significantly expand its computing capacity.
OpenAI and Oracle will partner to build three such centers in Shackelford County, Texas; Dona Ana County, New Mexico; and at an as-yet-undisclosed location in the Midwest.
The increased number of data centers will allow OpenAI and other technology companies to process larger volumes of data more quickly and efficiently.
This is crucial for the advancement of artificial intelligence, as these systems require enormous amounts of data and computing power to “learn” and improve their capabilities.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, highlighted the importance of developing this infrastructure in a statement. "Artificial intelligence can only fulfill its promise if we can develop the computing power to power it."
Furthermore, the project ensures compensation for small consumers, such as homes and neighborhood businesses, in cases of damage caused by failures in the electrical grid, including cable theft.
There are also incentives for micro and mini power generators, with fines for distributors that hinder or delay the installation of energy storage systems.
