The partnership aims to integrate the renewable energy portfolio and solutions of House of the Winds to the production of hydrogen at the Atlas Agro fertilizer plant, promoting the expansion of the renewable energy matrix and boosting the sustainability of agriculture in Brazil.
The project is expected to begin commercial operations in 2028, with the capacity to produce around 530 thousand tons of fertilizers per year.
The project will require around 300 MW of average renewable energy, supplied by House of Windss, intended for the production of green ammonium nitrate, essential for reducing carbon emissions in agriculture, and is located in Uberaba (MG).
According to Casa dos Ventos, the agribusiness sector is expected to represent more than 20% of Brazilian GDP in 2024, and the country is currently the largest global importer of fertilizers, with 41 million tons imported in 2023.
Global nitrogen fertilizer production relies heavily on the use of natural gas, a practice that contributes about 2% of global carbon emissions.
According to Lucas Araripe, executive director of Casa dos Ventos, the company has been working to ensure that Brazil takes the lead in the energy transition through the decarbonization of key sectors, such as agribusiness.
“In addition to bringing autonomy to the field, the thesis generates relevant investments in renewable energy for the country”, highlights Araripe.
According to Knut Karlsen, co-founder of Atlas Agro and president of Atlas Agro Brasil, the company's mission is to decarbonize global nitrogen production. Competitive and reliable energy is essential to produce sustainable nitrogen fertilizers at affordable prices for local farmers.
Maria Gabriela da Rocha Oliveira, director of renewable energy at Atlas Agro, comments that the low costs of renewable energy in Brazil represent a competitive solution to make national fertilizer production viable, promoting food security and industrial sustainability in the country.
