MetrôBH could become one of the largest producers of solar energy in Belo Horizonte (MG) later this year. The statement was made by the concessionaire's Implementation Engineer, Quiñónez Souza, during a press conference held this Wednesday (04).
This week, the concessionaire announced that it has completed the installation of 1.966 solar panels at the São Gabriel Maintenance Yard in the capital of Minas Gerais, advancing in the implementation of its own photovoltaic plant.
The initiative is part of a larger project that is expected to reach approximately 7 solar modules and an installed capacity of 2,65 MW when fully completed. The investment is R$ 16 million, using the concessionaire's own resources.
Currently, the metro already has solar power generation at the Santa Inês Station, where 144 photovoltaic panels have been installed, with enough power to meet the energy demand of the unit, including escalators, elevators, lighting and air conditioning systems.
At the São Gabriel Maintenance Yard, the installed capacity is approximately 900 kW, and all the energy generated will be used to power the site itself, including machinery, lighting, air conditioning systems, trains, overhead cranes, and some stations of the system.
With the expansion of the project, MetrôBH will stop emitting 469 tons of CO₂ per year, the equivalent of the annual absorption of approximately 47 adult trees.
MetrôBH is expected to surpass Mineirão in generation.

When fully implemented, the MetrôBH photovoltaic system should surpass the installed capacity of the Mineirão stadium's solar power plant, currently one of the largest in the capital of Minas Gerais.
According to Cemig (Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais), the Mineirão solar power plant, completed in 2014, has 5.910 photovoltaic modules and an installed capacity of 1,42 MW.
“For many years, Mineirão was one of the largest photovoltaic power plants in Belo Horizonte. Once we finalize the installation project, we will have an installed capacity of 2,65 MW, and with that, we will surpass Mineirão,” said Quiñónez Souza.

Great, reduced cost-benefit for the company, however, this is not passed on to the end customer, the subway user, who pays dearly to ride this third-world train.
