O Port of Açu and Repsol Sinopec Brazil have entered into a partnership to develop technical studies that combine technologies for directly capturing CO₂ from the air with the conversion of this gas into a low-carbon fuel, aimed at the maritime and aviation sectors.
The aim is to create a cycle that not only reduces carbon dioxide emissions, but also transforms polluting air into a renewable fuel for port activities.
The initiative foresees the installation of a pilot plant with the capacity to capture up to 5 thousand tons of CO₂ per year, converting them into approximately 300 liters of sustainable fuel per day, which can be tested directly on support vessels.
The project was one of the 43 selected in the FINEP public call-BNDES for the development and implementation of sustainable fuel production units for aviation and navigation, among 76 registered proposals.
The agreement includes the signing of a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding), which aligns the objectives of the parties and guarantees the commitment to the development of the new technological solution.
“This is a milestone for Brazilian and global industry, as it represents a significant advance in CO2 capture and the use of this technology for fuel production,” said Eugenio Figueredo, CEO of Porto do Açu.
