Power outages and fluctuations in the supply of electricity in Paraná were the subject of debate in the Infrastructure Committee of the Federal Senate. The hearing brought together representatives from the government, the concessionaire Copel, the productive sector, and... ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) to discuss the impacts of the failures, especially on rural activities.

Farmers have reported significant losses caused by the unstable service. According to them, the outages have led to animal deaths, food spoilage, and damage to essential production equipment.

Sector points to direct impact on production.

Representing the agricultural sector, Ágide Meneguette, from the Paraná State Agriculture Federation, highlighted the structural dependence on electricity in the countryside. “In rural areas, electricity is an essential input. Without electricity, there is no agricultural production. This is the reality we are experiencing in our state,” he stated.

He further emphasized that sectors such as pig farming, poultry farming, milk production, and fish farming are directly impacted by supply disruptions. Hearing participants also stated that the problems are not isolated incidents, but recurring, affecting producers in different regions of the state.

The chairman of the committee, Senator Sérgio Moro (PL-PR), drew attention to the increase in complaints in recent years and stressed that the problem is not limited to rural areas. “Complaints have grown significantly. We have had recent reports of power outages in urban areas, with delays in restoring service,” he stated.

The concessionaire and the regulator are monitoring the situation.

The utility company Copel reported that it has been expanding investments in infrastructure and strengthening its service, focusing on improving supply, including in rural areas.

Already ANEEL The regulatory body stated that it is aware of the increase in complaints and may intensify its oversight of the quality of service provided. The body also highlighted that it monitors the performance indicators of the distributors.

Possible regulatory changes under discussion.

During the hearing, possible changes to the regulation and criteria for evaluating the quality of electricity supply were also discussed. The expectation is that new measures may be adopted to reduce failures and increase the reliability of the system, especially in states with strong agricultural production.
