Drop in battery prices puts storage on Brazilians’ radar

Projections indicate that the lithium battery market in Brazil will grow annually between 20% and 30% until 2030

The recent announcement of increase in electricity bill of consumers for the month of September rekindled Brazilians' concerns about their spending.

In parallel to this, data from IEA (International Energy Agency, in its English acronym), point out that the price of batteries in the international market has reduced by 85% in recent years. In addition, lithium batteries in Brazil are expected to grow by up to 30% every year until 2030.

According to Sophia Costa, head of new business at Holu, a supplier of solutions for the commercialization and installation of solar energy systems, this entire context makes storage systems an increasingly attractive investment for homes, businesses, industries and rural properties.

“We see that the battery energy storage systems (BESS) market is booming globally, with the use of lithium-ion batteries becoming a reality in many parts of the world,” she said.

Currently, it is estimated that more than two million batteries are already installed in homes, especially in countries such as the United States, Germany and Australia. It was only a matter of time before the technology arrived in Brazil, Sophia says.

Storage and distributed energy resources are among ONS’s priorities

“In the coming years, both Brazilian homes and businesses will adopt these systems on a large scale, driven by the search for greater energy security, sustainability and independence from traditional electricity grids,” he pointed out.

According to the IEA, global installed battery storage capacity will reach more than 1 TW by the end of the decade, reaching almost 5 TW by 2050.

The Holu executive also recalls that in Brazil the trend towards increased use of batteries was widely perceived during Intersolar South America, one of the world's largest fairs for solar energy and related technologies, which took place in São Paulo (SP) at the end of August, with hundreds of international manufacturers bringing new storage solutions to the national market.

In the expert's view, the reduction in battery prices allows more consumers to consider the implementation of energy storage systems not only as a backup solution, but also as a way to protect themselves from energy inflation, reduce costs and eliminate losses due to lack of supply.

“Firstly, energy security is one of the main benefits, avoiding financial losses resulting from interruptions in the power supply. For companies, especially those that depend on continuous power, such as shops, restaurants and markets, batteries ensure that operations are not paralyzed, avoiding substantial losses, such as the deterioration of refrigerated product stocks”, explains Sophia.

How does storage benefit the operation of transmission lines?

“In homes, in addition to protecting household appliances against damage caused by power surges, batteries ensure the comfort of residents during blackouts, preserving food and even wine in cellars, and guaranteeing the continuity of critical services for people who depend on medical equipment, such as home ICUs,” he adds.

Finally, the expert also highlights that, although lithium batteries are often associated with solar systems on roofs, their use is not restricted to those who have photovoltaic panels.

“The batteries can be charged directly from the power grid and used as a backup in case of power failures, making them a versatile solution for both homes and businesses seeking greater autonomy and energy security. Furthermore, these batteries can operate in both off-grid systems, providing total independence from the power grid, and in on-grid systems, supplementing the power supply in case of interruptions or failures in the grid,” Sophia emphasizes.

They have been pushing the envelope on this issue since before the pandemic, big companies want to sell obsolete technology in Brazil, hoarders who open their mouths in 7 to 8 years, and reverse logistics is very complicated, so they do live broadcasts, invite experts, just blah blah blah, they lie to us.
There is already a new technology, a paradigm shift, batteries that would last twice as long or more, would accumulate 4 times more, why doesn't this come to the market?
As long as there are people who buy what the investment has already paid for, increasing the profit, even if it is a terrible solution, they will not invest in new releases.
Technological advancement is constant, don't be anxious to buy old junk.

batteries are still very expensive depending on the application and return!

    Good Afternoon!
How is the battery life reading done by charge quantities, its useful life? or by operational wear?
How many years of life regardless of how many charges it has received?

Interesting reading. I have a small off grid solar power installation with a lead acid battery bank. How do I get lifep04?
If possible, please indicate where to purchase batteries and an inverter with good capacity to power almost everything in the home.
    Thank you

I have photovoltaic energy, with batteries I can store the energy that is being produced before it enters the company's electrical grid.
Because if I can I will save, because the company only returns a percentage of the energy that goes into the electricity grid.

It's GD's new era, with more independence.
I think it will be a hit, due to the interest in the system with lithium batteries:

So I wanted to know if by installing batteries I can be free from the standard connection, extinguishing the link with the energy company?
