A saving of 4,5% of total energy consumption in Brazil in 2023 was generated by the energy efficiency actions of process (National Electric Energy Conservation Program). Equivalent to the consumption of more than 12 million homes throughout the year.
The data was released this Wednesday (11), during the presentation of results of Procel 2024 (base year 2023) by Thiago Barra, National Secretary of Energy Transition and Planning of the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) and Silas Rondeau, president of ENBPar (Brazilian Nuclear and Binational Energy Holding Company).
Consumption avoided by energy efficiency initiatives in 2023 increased by 8% compared to the previous year, reaching 23,91 billion kWh of electricity saved.
Furthermore, the energy saved by Procel helped the country to prevent around 1,1 million tons of CO2 equivalent from being released into the atmosphere, which corresponds to the emissions caused by 350 thousand combustion vehicles over the course of a year.
According to Silas Rondeau, “this result grew as the actions were diversified and expanded with excellence in their mission to promote quality of life and reduce consumer bills and environmental impacts, encouraging energy efficiency in various sectors, such as residential, commercial, industrial and public”.
For Thiago Barra, by encouraging sustainable energy efficiency practices, the “program plays a crucial role in building a more productive, balanced and conscious future in relation to the use of electrical energy”.
process
Procel acts as the main promoter of energy efficiency projects in Brazil. Among its actions is the Procel Seal, which promotes and qualifies technological development and the consequent increase in energy efficiency rates for equipment for domestic, commercial and industrial use, as well as in buildings.
The program was transferred in 2023 to ENBPar, which became responsible for maintaining part of the country's strategic assets after the Eletrobras capitalization process.
