The roof of the Nossa Senhora da Conceição Sanctuary, located in the north of Recife (PE), collapsed on the afternoon of this Friday (30) where there were dozens of people during an action to donate basic food baskets, leaving dead and injured.
O Mayor of Recife, João Campos, reported on its social networks that two deaths were recorded in the accident. “Unfortunately, two deaths have already been confirmed after the roof collapse at the Morro da Conceição Sanctuary. Our teams continue to work on emergency actions due to this tragedy,” he wrote.
The reason for the accident is still unknown. However, on August 12, there is a post on the entity's Instagram profile about the start of operations of a photovoltaic plant.
“The start of the installation of equipment for the operation of the solar power plant in the sanctuary, this project will benefit all communities in the parish by reducing energy costs”, says the publication.
This Friday, a note was posted on social media by the Rector of the Sanctuary, Emerson Borges: “We are immediately at the side of the victims and their families, our priority. Rescue teams are present in a task force in response to this tragic accident. May our prayers be raised to God through the intercession of the Immaculate Conception.”
According to information from the local press, the roof collapsed when a group of people were inside the church receiving basic food baskets.
In a statement, the governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra, posted a message of support on the social network “X”. “I have just learned about the collapse of part of the roof of the Morro da Conceição Sanctuary in Recife, a place of faith that is so important to our people. I am in the Sertão region for administrative purposes, but we have already activated our security teams for rescue and immediate care for the victims. May God and Our Lady of Conceição comfort everyone,” wrote the governor.

The sad thing is the loss of life, which is often caused by recklessness. Who am I to judge? However, we know that many companies, for many reasons, fail to do the basics in certain situations that require additional costs for a project. One of these situations "may" lead to accidents like this. A project of this size should never be carried out without a report from a civil engineer. However, if one is available, the case must be brought to justice, even if it does not bring the lives of the families back, but to prevent other accidents of this type or even greater than this one. May God have mercy if anyone is to blame for recklessness in this case.
During the report, I was observing the solar panel on the roof and remembered all the warnings about this dimensioning. And I came to confirm the error after hearing that it had been installed about a week before.
For medium and large-scale plants, which require a large number of modules, an analysis by a Professional Civil Engineer is required to certify the capacity of that roof to support a certain amount of weight.
In other words, depending on the structure of the roof and the weight of the modules (plates), a TECHNICAL REPORT accompanied by the ART from the Civil Engineer is required.
