O federal Senate approved, this Thursday (10), the creation of the Mixed Parliamentary Front for Electromobility, based on the Draft Resolution (PRS) 64/2021, by senator Rodrigo Cunha (PSDB-AL).

The project's rapporteur was senator Izalci Lucas (PSDB-DF) and the document will now go to promulgation.

The Front aims to “promote debates and initiatives regarding public policies and other measures that encourage electromobility in Brazil, such as the use of electric cars”.

The text also aims to “promote the debate on the country’s sustainable development, together with technological innovations to provide opportunities for smart cities ensured by renewable energy for the benefit of society as a whole”.

According to Cunha, the electromobility It is the most important tool for changing the chaotic reality of cities. “Inexpensive, fast and without polluting, it is capable of transforming the lives of each of a city’s inhabitants, directly or indirectly,” he said.

Izalci Lucas, in turn, added that the global automotive industry has been going through a major transformation process. “In the near future, electric vehicles will make up the majority of the global fleet. The country is behind in this debate”, he claimed.

Old claim

The creation of the Front – which brings together federal senators and deputies – is a banner defended for several years by ABVE (Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association).

In an exclusive interview with Solar Channel, Adalberto Maluf, president of the Association, celebrated the decision. “The Electromobility Front is of great importance for the country. It is the National Congress integrating itself into the global debate on transport and renewable energy,” he said.

In recent months, ABVE participated in several meetings at the National Congress to make the proposal viable. “Electromobility is the great technological frontier of the world economy, and the Parliamentary Front will help Brazil insert its economy into this transition as quickly as possible,” said Maluf.

“This is the way to increase the competitiveness of Brazilian companies, integrate them into global production chains and guarantee the jobs of the future for new generations of Brazilians”, he highlighted.

Priorities

For ABVE, the main objective of the Front is to create a national policy with candidates for president of the Republic and state governments. According to the entity, the focus of this policy should be to guide the transition of the Brazilian transport matrix towards a low carbon and low pollutant emission economy.

ABVE also defends a plan capable of integrating the various initiatives already underway by city halls and state governments in defense of electromobility and transmitting confidence to businesspeople, investors and consumers in general.

A policy similar to the Green Deal in Europe, China's 14th Five-Year Plan and the broad renewable energy program launched by the Joe Biden administration in the United States last year.

“Brazil has all the conditions to once again be an important global actor in the debate on the energy transition. We have a sustainable electricity generation matrix of more than 80% and the best global biofuel technology”, said the president of ABVE. “We have the best of both technologies,” he added.

“We believe that the role of the Parliamentary Front will be decisive in helping Brazil regain the global leadership it has had for 30 years in low-emission transport policies”, concluded Maluf.
