Known for its cool mountain climate and as one of the most charming winter destinations in the country, Campos do Jordão (SP) has been home to an initiative since last year that combines technology, sustainability and environmental education.
Installed in June 2025 in Capivari Park, the Liquid Forest is a pioneering project in Brazil that combines solar energy and biotechnology as an urban solution to improve air quality in public spaces.
The project consists of five technological trees that reproduce the process of photosynthesis in real time. Each unit functions as a photobioreactor, equipped with sensors and artificial lighting systems, using three types of microalgae and a cyanobacterium to absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂) and release oxygen.
The structures, which use solar energy, are capable of processing up to 160 liters of air per minute and generate reusable biomass. Together, they have a CO₂ capture capacity equivalent to that of approximately 200 conventional trees.
The Liquid Forest proposal is not to replace natural forests, but to complement urban vegetation, especially in places where tree planting is limited.
Biomass and circular economy
In addition to air purification, the system generates microalgae biomass, which can be reused as an input for the production of biofuels, natural fertilizers, and other sustainable products.
This reuse expands the project's positive impact and connects it to the logic of the circular economy, aligned with the use of renewable energy sources.
The experience in Campos do Jordão reinforces the potential of solar energy in innovative urban applications, going beyond rooftops and conventional power plants. Projects like the Liquid Forest show how the source can be integrated into environmental, tourism, and educational solutions, expanding its role in the energy transition.
International recognition
In November 2025, Capivari Park achieved international recognition by winning the Innovation category of the 2025 Mauricio de Sousa Award, specifically for its Liquid Forest project.
The award ceremony – which recognizes initiatives that combine technology, sustainability, and social impact in tourist areas of Latin America – was held at the complex. epic universe, inaugurated by Universal Studios, in Orlando, in the United States.
