Solar tracking solutions handle hail and rolling terrain

Nextracker's suite of hardware and software technologies also handle changing weather conditions

The solar solution provider Nextracker presented a set of innovations at RE+ 2023 this year in Las Vegas, the largest solar fair in the United States, which took place between the 12th and 14th of September.

Each of these launches has been delivered to large-scale photovoltaic power plants for three or more years. The product suite combines hardware, intelligent software and process innovations to deliver value to owners and EPCs.

NX Horizon XTR-1.5™

According to the company, the NX Horizon XTR-1.5 significantly reduces or even eliminates earthmoving work in extreme terrain locations, without complex joints or additional components.

The product can also save tons of steel with shorter piles and thousands of cubic meters of cut and fill, accelerating construction schedules, minimizing environmental impact and reducing project risk.

According to the company, minimizing changes to the soil also prevents long-term erosion and preserves habitats, an important factor when it comes to facilitating licensing for new projects.

“Our product development priorities are based on listening to customers and innovating to create value for them,” commented Dan Shugar, founder and CEO of Nextracker.

“The suite of hardware and software technologies we are launching benefits customers by accelerating construction, reducing the risk of extreme hail and generating more power in rapidly changing atmospheric conditions,” he highlighted.

Zonal Diffuse™

Nextracker has expanded its TrueCapture yield control and optimization software with Zonal Diffuse, a new tracking function that improves power generation during rapidly changing irradiation conditions. This new technology includes additional high spatial resolution detection and new control algorithms, adjusting the trackers to variations in cloud cover across the plant.

According to the company, plants equipped with Zonal Diffuse can “chase clouds” for additional gains without compromising tracking performance during clear sky conditions.

Zonal Diffuse complements TrueCapture's terrain-adaptive row-to-row tracking mode and Split Boost, which is the tracking optimization algorithm for half-cell modules.

NX Horizon Hail Pro™

The Hail Pro, on display at RE+ 2023, leverages the inherent capabilities of Nextracker's flagship NX Horizon™ smart solar tracking system, including its balanced design, integrated UPS and independent row architecture.

In the manufacturer's view, due to this advanced design, the NX Horizon can switch to the safety position up to four times faster than standard trackers - time that is crucial when hail storms occur, in which repositioning the modules without intervention from the operator in case of network interruption is essential.

The new Hail Pro solution also increases the automatic safety position using information from meteorological services, hail alert services and, when desired, the equipment goes to a safety position of up to 75 degrees, suitable for locations subject to extreme hail.

“Obtaining insurance in hail-prone regions like Texas is an increasingly challenging issue facing solar project developers and owners today,” said Michael Alvarez, COO and co-founder of Longroad Energy. “Advanced technology, like Nextracker’s new Hail Pro suite, is targeted where our industry needs to go.”
