According to a survey by ABSOLAR (Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy), the state of São Paulo has already surpassed the 5,4 GW mark, with operations on residential roofs, small businesses, rural areas, industries and public buildings.
In total, the region has more than 562 thousand active connections, located in 645 municipalities, equivalent to 100% of the cities in São Paulo. There are more than 769 thousand consumers who enjoy the benefits of self-generation.
Since 2012, solar power generation has already attracted R$25,2 billion in investments to São Paulo, generating more than 164 jobs and raising R$7,6 billion for public coffers.
But there is still room for improvement. The organization argues that the state should invest more in incentive programs, public policies, solar panels on public buildings and affordable housing.
Bill 624/2023, still on the agenda, which creates the Basic Energy Income Program (REBE), aims to make life even easier for those who want to generate their own energy, but who face refusals from distributors.
With the new law, responsibility for any adjustments to the electricity grid falls to the distributors themselves, at no extra cost to the consumer.
“If any reinforcement is needed in the electrical infrastructure to receive this microgeneration, the distributor will be responsible for making this investment directly, instead of passing these costs on to the consumer,” said Pedro Drumond, state coordinator of the ABSOLAR in Sao Paulo.
