Sunrun, the largest residential solar provider in the US, has entered into a strategic partnership with Tesla Electric to launch a new clean energy plan in Texas—the second-most populous state in the country, with over 30 million residents and a history of unstable power grids.
The initiative combines solar panels from the Sunrun Flex program with Tesla's Powerwall battery system, allowing consumers to generate, store, and use their own energy, with more control over consumption and greater security during power outages.
The plan works through a monthly subscription with a fixed rate, and includes not only the supply of solar energy, but also participation in a VPP (Virtual Power Plant) — virtual power plant formed by residences with distributed generation and batteries.
In practice, the systems store energy during the day and inject electricity into the grid at times of peak demand, helping to stabilize the power grid and reducing dependence on traditional sources. The plan also includes automatic backup in the event of a blackout, a common occurrence in some regions of the state.
Companies expect high adoption of the new model, driven by a combination of favorable climate, incentives for distributed generation, and growing interest in sustainable and decentralized solutions. The announcement comes at a time when Texas faces challenges related to grid reliability, while more homeowners seek energy autonomy.
