The energy storage market in Brazil is booming. According to projections from ABSAE (Brazilian Association of Energy Storage Solutions), the segment is expected to attract more than R$44 billion in investments by 2030.
Of this amount, around R$14 billion is expected for off-grid solutions, mainly aimed at isolated communities, such as those located in the Amazon region. These initiatives aim to bring clean and affordable energy to hard-to-reach places, promoting energy inclusion.
Although promising, the sector still faces significant challenges. In an exclusive interview with Canal Solar, Jorge Ortiz, Sales Manager for South America at Victron Energy, and Natália Maestá, company ambassador, shared their insights on the current scenario, the opportunities and the solutions offered by Victron Energy to overcome these barriers.
Importance of sizing
According to Jorge Ortiz, correct sizing is essential for the success of energy storage systems, but it is a point where many integrators still encounter difficulties.
“In Brazil, few people know how to size correctly. Many still associate the size of the inverter with the storage system, which is a mistake. An efficient system requires a balance between the number of photovoltaic panels and the capacity of the batteries, considering that the most expensive component of a battery system is, in fact, the battery,” he explained.
Modularity is another differentiator highlighted by the executive. “Our proposal is to offer a technical and flexible system, allowing the client to configure exactly what they need, without limitations imposed by 'all-in-one' solutions. This reduces costs, avoids wasted components and facilitates future expansions,” he stated.
Robustness and versatility
Natália Maestá emphasized the reliability of Victron equipment, which is designed to operate in extreme conditions. “Our systems have already been tested in extremely cold climates, such as -10°C, and also in hot and humid environments, such as the Amazon. This proves the robustness of our solutions, which meet the needs in different scenarios and day-to-day challenges.”
According to her, this robustness is rooted in the long history of Victron Energy, which celebrates 50 years in 2025. “Few companies in the sector can claim to have equipment with more than 15 years of continuous operation, especially in remote and challenging conditions. This is one of our greatest differentiators.”
Education and professional development
In addition to the technical challenges, Jorge and Natália pointed out the need to greater education and training in the sector. “There is a lack of qualified professionals who understand not only sizing, but also installation and sales of storage systems. Many still treat storage as if it were an on-grid system, which does not work,” reported Ortiz.
Maestá added that, in addition to the lack of technical knowledge, the market faces regulatory and financial barriers. “Storage is often seen as expensive, but this depends on the application and the correct sizing. We need more incentives, clear regulations and financing options to facilitate access to these technologies.
Success stories
Victron Energy has been making a name for itself globally with projects ranging from motorhomes to systems in remote regions of the Amazon and Andean mountains. “In one of our projects in the Amazon, we installed a redundant system at a military post on the border with Venezuela.”
“Even after lightning damaged part of the equipment, the system continued to operate partially, ensuring power in a difficult-to-access location,” explained the Sales Manager.
The flexibility of the equipment has also enabled unique applications, such as a hotel in Africa that automatically adjusts the temperature of the air conditioning units based on the state of charge of the batteries, optimizing energy consumption and increasing autonomy.
Future of storage in Brazil
For Jorge Ortiz, the future of energy storage in Brazil will depend on greater practice and learning by professionals in the sector. “There is a greater learning curve than in the on-grid system, but with the growth of the market and the search for more autonomous solutions, those who are prepared will have a huge competitive advantage,” he concluded.
