In two months, more than 4,4 consumers decided on the Free Energy Market

ACL has already accumulated more than 40 thousand consumer units, an increase of 10 thousand compared to the same period in 2023

In two months, more than 4,4 consumers decided on the Free Energy Market
The distributors that lost the most customers to the Free Energy Market were Copel, Enel SP and Celesc.

The pace of migration to the Free Energy Market continues to accelerate in Brazil. In the first two months of this year, 4.403 consumers have already notified their intention to leave the regulated market between 2024 and 2025. 

According to data updated by ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) and determined by Canal Solar, only in February, 2.244 units they chose the freedom to select their energy supplier.

The potential migration report reveals that a A total of 19.035 consumers plan to join the ACL (Free Contracting Environment) between 2024 and 2025. Of this contingent, 94,66% (18.018) are units with consumption of less than 500 kW, classified as retail customers. 

The distributors that lost the most customers are Copel (Paraná), Enel SP (São Paulo), Celesc (Santa Catarina), CPFL Paulista (São Paulo), Cemig (Minas Gerais), RGE (Rio Grande do Sul), Neoenergia Elektro (São Paulo), ENEL CE (Ceará) and Light (Rio de Janeiro). 

The evolution of migration potential shows continuous growth:

  • 14.632 Consumer Units (31/12/2023)
  • 16.791 Consumer Units (31/01/2024)
  • 19.035 Consumer Units (29/02/2024)

The distribution of migration by region of the country is as follows:

  • Southeast: 8.597 UC (45,16%)
  • South: 5.038 UC (26,46%)
  • Northeast: 3.726 UC (19,57%)
  • Central West: 1.158 UC (6,08%)
  • North: 519 UC (2,72%)

Due to the consumption profile of new customers, the volume of energy added to the Free Energy Market is relatively low. The more than 19 thousand UCs represent a total consumption of 1.240 average MW, with 798 MWmed coming from retail consumers.

The CCEE (Electric Energy Trading Chamber) reports that 3.866 consumers completed the migration to the Free Energy Market between January and February, adding a monthly load of approximately 990 MW. This volume of units represents 52% of tickets registered throughout 2023.

It is important to note that there are differences in the reports of ANEEL and CCEE: the first records consumers who decided to migrate to the ACL, while the second represents the sum of units that completed the process.

It is essential to remember that the migration process to Mercado Livre can take at least 180 days, but this period can be reduced at the discretion of the distributor. 

Until March, the Mercado Livre accumulated around 40 thousand consumer units, an increase of 10 thousand compared to the same period in 2023.

Who are the retail consumers?

Retail consumers are those whose load is less than 500 kW and are part of Group A, being connected at medium and high voltage. They receive this classification because their migration to Mercado Livre is only possible with the support of a retail company, responsible for facilitating the entire process.
