A sales of electrified light vehicles totaled 5,989 units in March, which represents a growth of 55.5% compared to the same period in 2022. According to ABVE (Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association), this was the best March in the entire historical series, which began in 2012.

The March numbers also confirm the first quarter of 2023 as the best in the historical series, with 14,787 light electrified vehicles sold – 50% more than the same period in 2022 (9,844).

According to ABVE, the numbers confirm the heating of the light electrified market in Brazil at the beginning of 2023. Light electrified vehicles include plug-in and non-plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, including cars, light commercial vehicles, utility vehicles and SUVs .

The total fleet of light electrified vehicles in circulation in Brazil, since the beginning of the historical series, reached 141,291 units in March this year.

Plug-in Vehicle

An important highlight of March was the growth in sales of plug-in electric vehicles (which can be recharged using an external connector), confirming a trend from previous months.

Of the 5,989 registrations in March, 2,172 were plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and 587 were 100% battery electric vehicles), totaling 2,750 plug-in vehicles in the month. This total indicates a significant growth of 194% in this segment compared to the total of 939 light electric plug-ins sold in March 2022.

“Such numbers are very representative for the electromobility market in Brazil, as they signal greater confidence among buyers in the technology of electric vehicles rechargeable via external connector. This confidence has been reinforced by the increase in recharging infrastructure”, says ABVE in a note.

According to ABVE, in December 2022 there were a total of approximately 2,950 public and semi-public charging stations in the country. The forecast of entrepreneurs in the sector is that there will be at least 10 thousand by 2025.
