The implementation of a network of weather stations in the state of São Paulo, aimed at the continuous monitoring of climatic variables, should contribute significantly to strengthening the resilience of the local transmission infrastructure in the face of increasing extreme events.

The objective is to expand the capacity for anticipation, prevention, and response to phenomena such as strong winds, forest fires, storms, landslides, river floods, peak temperatures, and even rising sea levels—factors that can directly affect the operation and reliability of the electrical system.

The initiative, a partnership between ISA Energia Brasil, the company responsible for approximately 95% of the energy transmitted in the state of São Paulo, and Climatempo, a company specializing in meteorological services, is part of the electric company's climate adaptation strategy, with an execution horizon until 2030.

Precision

The main expected benefit of the initiative is the improvement in the detection of critical phenomena and the generation of more precise operational alerts, providing technical support for preventive management of transmission assets.

Climatempo, responsible for operating and interpreting meteorological data, will convert the collected information into intelligence applied to decision-making.

According to ISA Energia Brasil, the country still has a limited number of complete weather stations relative to its territorial size, which reduces the capacity for detailed monitoring and increases the challenge of accurately predicting weather events that directly impact the electrical infrastructure.

The project foresees the installation of four complete meteorological stations, strategically positioned in the interior of São Paulo state, on towers selected based on technical studies to improve regional climate knowledge.

Digital Platforms

The data obtained by the new stations will be integrated into the company's corporate platforms, including the Asset Monitoring Center, expanding real-time assessment capabilities and supporting operational decisions.

The expectation is that the system will help identify wind gusts, heavy rains, and other events with the potential to cause outages or compromise the integrity of transmission lines.

In addition to continuous monitoring, the project will also allow for the reconstruction of historical wind data since 1980 and the preparation of annual reports. The transmission company states that this set of information could contribute to mapping the most critical points along the lines and support studies on the impacts of climate change in the concession area.

Diagnosis

ISA Energia Brasil also reported that, in 2024, it completed a diagnosis of the level of exposure of its assets to climate threats, with risk analysis for 2030, 2040 and 2050.

The study was conducted in partnership with the consulting firm WayCarbon and served as the basis for the development of an adaptation and resilience plan focused on transmission infrastructure.

In parallel, the company states that it is leading the development of a technical study focused on providing input for the planning and regulation of the National Interconnected System (SIN) in the face of advancing climate change.

Among the proposals mentioned is the creation of a cost-benefit analysis methodology for investments in resilience and potential regulatory adjustments.
