The power outage crisis in São Paulo intensified throughout Wednesday (10) after a combination of rain and wind gusts that exceeded 90 km/h.
What was a worrying scenario in the morning It turned into the biggest power outage of the year on the Enel-SP network, leaving more than 2,2 million people without electricity in the capital and metropolitan region.
In addition to the power outages, the storm caused trees to fall, roads to be blocked, structures to be damaged, and public parks to be closed as a precaution.
According to Enel-SP, in the city of São Paulo alone, more than 1 million people were affected, equivalent to 23% of the city's customers. The distributor reported that seven other nearby municipalities registered more than 40% of their consumers without power.
According to a ranking released by local monitoring agencies, Embu-Guaçu appears as the most affected, with 100% of its customers without service. São Lourenço da Serra follows closely behind with 90%, and then Pirapora do Bom Jesus with 83% of its units disconnected.
In a statement, the utility attributed the power grid collapse to extreme weather conditions. "Due to the winds, in some areas the power lines are being hit by objects and branches, which is disrupting the supply, in addition to falling trees," the company reported.
The episode reignites criticism about the fragility of the São Paulo concessionaire's infrastructure. In October 2024, for example, another Storm left 3,1 million people without power. – the biggest blackout ever recorded by the distributor in its concession area.
